Having recently seen a preview of Dark Side contributor Calum Waddell’s excellent documentary on the slasher film, Slice & Dice, it got me thinking of how supple the genre can be despite essentially falling into two groups. There are the ‘superhuman’ slashers, where the killer is a murderous, diabolical presence from the outset that becomes an antihero as the film-cum- sequels progress and then there are the ‘sophomore sociopath’ types. This latter category takes the form of a whodunit with an awkward prime suspect, plenty of (blood-)red herrings, not to mention victims, and usually a surprise twist to finish off the gory endeavours.
