Body modification would seem a plum choice for a genre movie. Makeshift, underground surgery to achieve, amongst other things, semi-bestial metamorphoses, performed in a torture chamber of gratification with further offers of voluntary amputation or suspension from anatomical parts. In the documentary Flesh & Blood, about Guinness Book of World Records body mod figure Steve Haworth, an unqualified doctor that does not use anaesthesia, he describes himself as “an artist sculpting with flesh.” Haworth is surely an inspiration for the titular character of American Mary, the Soska sisters’ peculiar attempt to explore this extreme fetish scene.
